Hans Hofmann

The VRC has cataloged 12 images from Hans Hofmann: Poems & Paintings on Paper. It is worth coming into Jen Library to check out the book as the paintings are interspersed with hand written poems by the artist. The images are available in the Digital Image Database with an active MySCAD log-in.

The following is my personal artistic creed:

It is the drama of the colors

that makes a painting –

that gives it form and life.

Pictorial inssulation challenges

predominance and subordination:

that it may live to be devoured

that it may prevail to submit

that it be sacrificed serve

the passion of its function

to make the smallest

still a king –

a pearl-

a diamond in the crown of glory

that is life.
